Clinton, Mo. – (March 18, 2019) – Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare (GVMH) announces the retirement of Dr. Louis Monaco, DO, specialist in eye disease and surgery.
Dr. Monaco worked at GVMH for 32 years. He received his medical degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at Tulsa Regional Medical Center/Oklahoma State University followed by a fellowship in general ophthalmology at Eye Associates of New Mexico/University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. While he was in New Mexico, he was recruited to join GVMH.
In addition to caring for his patients, Dr. Monaco has been an active member of the Clinton community. He was a board member of the Clinton School District for six years and school board president for three of those years. He is also a former board member of the United Way-Clinton, was recognized as Optimist Citizen of the Year and enjoyed coaching basketball for his son’s traveling teams.
“We truly appreciate all that Dr. Monaco has done for Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare, his dedication to our patients and his leadership in our community,” said Craig Thompson, CEO of GVMH. “We wish him, his wife Benecia and the rest of their family the very best.”
Dr. Monaco plans to continue to work at the Truman Medical Center teaching surgery to ophthalmology students two days a week.
“It has been a pleasure to care for my patients throughout the years. I’m very fortunate to be able to do what I enjoy and help restore my patient’s eyesight,” said Louis Monaco. “I will miss everyone, but I am thankful for all of the years and memories I have made here. I would also like to thank Dick Fleming and Dr. Joe Gialde for convincing me that this was a great opportunity for my practice and a wonderful, welcoming community. They were right on both counts. Benecia and I came to try Clinton for a ‘year or two’ and ended up staying 32 years.”
A retirement celebration will be held April 4 from 5-7 p.m. at the Delozier Building in Clinton. The public is invited to attend.
