Mako Robotic Arm

At Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare, we utilize the Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology for patients needing knee and hip replacement surgery.

Total knee or hip replacement surgery is necessary for patients who have a diseased or damaged joint. With the use of Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology, the joint is replaced with an artificial implant.

The process begins with a CT scan of your joint that is used to generate a 3D virtual model of your unique anatomy. This virtual model is then loaded into the Mako system software and is used to create your personalized pre-operative plan.

The Mako Robotic Arm does not actually perform the surgery. During the procedure, the surgeon guides the arm to remove diseased bone and cartilage before inserting the implant. The Mako system guides the surgeon within a pre-defined area and helps prevent moving outside of the planned boundaries. This provides more accurate placement and alignment of the implant.

Surgery using the Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology leads to faster recovery times and less pain.

Patient Story

James Switzer’s knee pain and limitations were holding him back from living his life to the fullest. After an appointment with Dr. James Womack at Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare, Switzer found out he was a candidate for total knee replacement surgery and was excited that he could have the procedure close to home.

Total knee replacement surgery using Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology is designed to help surgeons provide patients with a personalized surgical experience based on their specific anatomy and diagnosis. For the surgery, Dr. Womack guides the robotic arm to remove diseased bone and cartilage and then inserts the artificial joint, called an implant. The Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology helps make the surgery precise to each patient, so a minimal amount of soft tissue is affected, resulting in less pain after surgery and a quicker recovery time.

Following his surgery, Switzer was up walking within hours of the surgery, out of the hospital in 36 hours and completed his therapy within 60 days.

“Knee replacement surgery using the Mako Robotic Arm provided a solution to my pain and limitations and I was pleased to be able to be able to have the procedure done close to home.” – James Switzer
